InitLive alternatives, honestly compared

Bloomerang acquired InitLive in 2023 and relaunched it as Bloomerang Volunteer. If that has you looking at volunteer tools, here is the landscape. One disclosure up front: we make Ember, one of the options below.
The main InitLive alternatives are Bloomerang Volunteer itself (from $119 a month), a dedicated volunteer scheduling tool, a spreadsheet with a sign-up form for small programs, and Ember Volunteers (free under a $50K budget).
Bloomerang acquired InitLive in 2023 and relaunched it as Bloomerang Volunteer, per Bloomerang's own company page, and initlive.com now redirects to Bloomerang's site. No shutdown has been announced. What changed is that a standalone volunteer scheduling tool became a module inside a donor platform, which is good news if you wanted both and awkward if you wanted one.
Before you switch anything
Export your volunteer records and hours
Especially logged hours. If you report volunteer time as grant match, that history has real value and is painful to reconstruct.
Count what you actually use
Shift scheduling, self sign-up, check-in, reminders, hour tracking. Most orgs use three of those and pay for all of them.
Check your renewal date
Volunteer season is the worst time to migrate. Move between programs, not during one.

The question that decides it
Are you buying volunteer management, or an operations system that includes it? If your volunteer program is the organization, a specialist tool will out-feature everything else and that is the right call. If volunteers are one of six things you are juggling and the hours need to land in a grant report, a suite is less to maintain.
One pricing trap worth naming: tools that bill per volunteer make a single large event expensive, and events are exactly when you need the tool most. Check the model, not just the headline price.
