How does Ember know what we need to file?
You answer four quick things: when your fiscal year ends, whether you have paid staff, whether you ask for donations, and whether you serve food. From that and your state, Ember builds your filing calendar. Where Ember knows the rule, it works out the due date and links the filing portal. Where it doesn't, like a state report it has no rule for or a food permit, the date is marked Date to confirm. No reminders go out until you set it. Anything unusual, like a city business license, you can add by hand. Get set up in a few minutes.
Is the filing calendar really free?
Yes. The filing calendar is free for nonprofits with budgets under $50K a year. There's a real free tier with unlimited users and no trial clock. As your budget grows, a simple subscription scales with it, and every tier includes every app. Here's how pricing works.
Does Ember file things for us?
No. Ember watches the dates, links you to the filing portal where it knows one, and keeps your record once it's done. You still do the actual filing.
What happens when we finish a filing?
Record it as filed, with the date, a confirmation number, and the receipt if you have one. Ember rolls the due date forward to next time, so the calendar is always looking ahead. Before you file the 990, it also shows whether the board approved it in Board Hub and whether any money received this fiscal year is recorded in Budget.
Will Ember remind us before something is due?
Yes. The person who owns a filing gets an email 30 days before it's due, a week before, and on the day, then once a week while it's overdue. If nobody owns it, the reminder goes to your owners and admins. An assigned filing also shows up in that person's Work list.
Is this legal or tax advice?
No. Ember is a helping hand for staying on top of common filings, not legal advice, and it won't cover every obligation your org might have. For anything unusual, check with your accountant or attorney.
Who on our team can see and change it?
Everyone on your team can see where filings stand, so nobody's left in the dark. Owners and admins build the calendar, and the person a filing is assigned to can record it as filed too. Everyone else gets a calm, read-only view. It pairs well with the rest of your team's tools in Ember.
Do we have to be a 501(c)(3)?
No. Ember is for nonprofits and the people starting them: grassroots groups, all-volunteer teams, fiscally sponsored projects, and founders still getting set up. No paperwork needed to start. If we ever add nonprofit-only pricing, we'll confirm status just for that, never to let you in.
Is our data safe?
