About Ember

What is Ember?

Updated August 2026

You probably got here from a volunteer sign-up page or a sign-in screen. Here's the short version, for both kinds of people who land here.

Ember is software for small nonprofits. The organization that sent you here uses it to run their volunteer program — we're the plumbing underneath. Your relationship is with them, not with us.

If you're a volunteer

There's nothing you need to do here. The organization you signed up with holds your information; we store it for them and we don't do anything else with it. We don't sell it, we don't share it with other organizations, and we won't send you marketing email. If you want to change or remove what they hold, ask them — they can do it in a few clicks, and we can't do it without them.

Our privacy policy spells out the details in plain language.

If you run a nonprofit

This is the part that might be useful to you.

Ember is being built for organizations in roughly the $200K–$2M range — the ones where the executive director is also the volunteer coordinator, the grant writer, and the person who fixes the printer. Most software in this sector is either priced for organizations ten times your size or so stripped down it's just a spreadsheet with a login.

Ember Volunteers is the first app: sign-up pages, shift scheduling, hour tracking, and reports your funders will actually accept. Unlimited users on every plan, because charging per seat in an organization run by volunteers makes no sense.

More apps are coming — staff time and grant compliance next — and they'll share one login and one set of organization records.

It's free for nonprofits. Not a trial, not a starter tier that stops working when you grow. We'll eventually ask organizations who can afford it to chip in, and for-profit users will pay, but the core stays free for the sector it's built for.

Ember Volunteers

Public sign-up pages, shift scheduling, hour tracking, and funder-ready reports — with unlimited users on every plan.

Who's behind it

Ember is built by a very small team that got tired of watching good organizations lose evenings to spreadsheets and software that wasn't made for them. We're early, we're honest about what does and doesn't work yet, and we'd rather you tell us it's wrong than quietly stop using it.

If something here is broken or confusing, tell us directly. A person reads it.

Common questions

What is Ember?

Ember is software for small nonprofits. The first app, Ember Volunteers, handles volunteer sign-ups, scheduling, hour tracking and reporting. Organizations use it to run their programs; volunteers see it when they sign up for a shift.

Why did I see “Powered by Ember”?

The organization you were interacting with uses Ember to run its volunteer program. The page belongs to them; we provide the software underneath.

Does Ember sell or share my information?

No. Information a volunteer gives an organization belongs to that organization. We store it on their behalf, we don't sell it, and we don't share it with other organizations.

Is Ember free?

It's free for nonprofits — not a trial period. For-profit organizations pay, and we'll ask nonprofits who can afford it to contribute voluntarily.
